pro wrestling in reverse

It has been a week since I was last at Squared Circle Wrestling Gym here in Toronto (it will be a lot longer before I return, but I will). For almost a year and a half, I have been taking the 1.5 hour commute (one way) from the southeast end of Toronto to the northwest corner of the city just above the aiport. I call it the land of box store churches, industrial commercial buildings and monster-sized hydro towers. The gym is located at 320 Deerhide Cresent just off of Arrow Road. Everyone knows that pro wrestling is something I care about very much just as others care about being on the soccer team or in a baseball league. What I love about it is that it is both athletic and performance. An excellent combination when you are an artist. Instead of getting into in my late teens as many do, I started in my twenties picking up things from other workers here and there. For me it was important to go to university and build up my resume as an artist/teacher first. That way I could use my income from teaching and my art practice to pursue it with more intensity, buy my own ring and on top of all that I have accumulated a collection of wrestling gear (which could dress an entire indy fed) and memorabilia that the Pro Wrestling Hall of Fame would be proud of. In short, I did pro wrestling in reverse and as a 37 year old man I am not a high flyer, or a lucha style worker (my body says so). Instead I am a classic style pro wrestler who does best in a southern, Memphis and entertainment manner of working. My trainer Rob Fuego would say “I like to work at Greg the Hammer Valentine speed (I’m a little quicker than that to be honest)” In this entry I wanted say thanks to Rob Fuego and all the other pro wrestlers who workout at Squared Circle. You have helped me come a long way both technically but also in terms of knowing what pro wrestling means to me. I want to personally thank you for making me feel accepted and like family. Make no mistake, I think of you the same way. See you when I am resettled! Contact Squared Circle Training here.
